reflection task 2a save your language save your culture

Language is the most important part of communication, but
should not be thought just for communication. Prof. Dr. Oktay Sinanoğlu says that '' our language is our identitiy.'' That is, language is associated with culture. Therefore, I want to inform you about culture and language relationship and its importance.. To save our culture has both personal and social significance to me. From the perspective of personal issue, the use of proper Turkish is very important for the sake of saving our identitiy, and from the perspective of social issue,  to save and to transmit culture is directly interrelated with language, so it is an important part of social issue. One person who understand the importance of language-culture relationship is Mustafa Kemal ATATÜRK. Hence, he did a lot of revolutions on this issue and studied to save our culture. Moreover, according to Plato, language equals idea, so one nation's thinking system is nurtured by language. If this system crumbles, that notion has become to lose its identitiy and its values, and couldn't transmit its culture to another generation. Unfortunately, we are standing face to face with this problem. When we look at people around us, we can see the corrupt Turkish, and also we can see signboards, menus including non-native names. This is, how shall I say, horrible, weird and saddening. How can we get rid of this problem? The answer is easy: find errors, correct them and propagate proper usages. Also, raise people to apprehend the problem. It is necessary to demonstrate them that to save our language equals to save our culture.

rewrite reflection task 2b breaking bad

Breaking Bad is an American crime drama television series created and produced by Vince Gilligan. The show originally aired on the AMC network for five seasons. It tells the story of Walter White, a struggling high school chemistry teacher diagnosed with lung cancer, and together with his former student Jesse Pinkman, turns to a life of crime, producing and selling crystallized methamphetamine to secure his family's financial future before he dies. The show's title is from a Southern colloquialism meaning to "raise hell".
Walter's family consists of his wife Skyler and children, Walter, Jr. a.k.a. Flynn and Holly. The show also features Skyler's sister Marie Schrader, and her husband Hank, a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent. Walter hires lawyer Saul Goodman, who connects him with private investigator and fixer Mike Ehrmantraut and in turn Mike's employer, drug kingpin Gus Fring. The final season introduces the characters of Todd Alquis and Lydia Rodarte-Quayle.Breaking Bad is widely regarded as one of the greatest television series of all time. By the time the series finale aired, the series was among the most-watched cable shows on American television. The show received numerous awards, including sixteen Primetime Emmy Awards, eight Satellite Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, two Peabody Awards and a People's Choice Award. For his leading performance, Cranston won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series four times. In 2013, Breaking Bad entered the Guinness World Records as the highest rated show of all time. That's why I chose this series. My personal view is that this series deserve these awards because it reflects the real life masterly. It is the perfect example of an American family and crime world. I loved the content of this movie. I watched all seasons, and I am not regretful, so I strongly recommend it to you.

Walter White and Tony Soprano represent mirror-image takes on the problem of evil, damnation and free will. Walter is a man who deliberately abandons the light for the darkness while Tony is someone born and raised in darkness. This series gives this message to society.

textual analysis on tenses Chasing shadows and light in Iran

Chasing shadows and light in Iran

In the garden courtyard of Esfahan’s famous Abbasi Hotel, surrounded by 300-year-old caravanserai-style rooms, I was in the company of an Iranian architect. We were discussing my plan to travel to the desert towns of Kashan, Na’in, Garmeh and Yazd.

“Ah those places!” his face lit up. “It’s like chasing shadows and light when you go there.”

These words would stay with me during my journey to these towns, where 3,000 years of generations have adapted to the environment to create a unique style of desert living.
I started in the beautiful city of Kashan, which sits where Iran’s vast desert, Dasht-e Kavir, begins. Located just 250km southeast of Tehran, it’s often overlooked by travellers heading for the big attractions further south, such as Shiraz and Esfahan.

Built from unbaked mud brick, the presence of shadow and light was evident from the very moment I stepped into the old city in search of Ehsan Hotel, one of the famous 19th-century traditional houses that were built by wealthy merchants at the height of the lucrative Qajar Dynasty when Kashan was a bustling commercial hub. Most houses have since disappeared but some have been repaired and are open to the public.

challenging words:

courtyard: avlu
caravanserai: kervansaray
unbaked mud brick: çiğ- pişmemiş kerpiç
Merchant: tüccar
lucrative: kazançlı, karlı
bustling: canlı, hareketli
commercial: ticari
hub: merkez

This news is about desert towns of Iran. This is a travel news. Marian Reid tells us his expressions about where he travelled, what he saw and what he withnessed. As a result of this situation, the writer's tone is descriptive, expressive and informative. This is because he describes towns (unbaked mud brick), expresses their feelings (Ah those places!” his face lit up. “It’s like chasing shadows and light when you go there. ) and gives informations about there. He mainly uses  past tense because he conveys his memories, so he must use specific time in the past. Also, he partly uses simple present tense while he is expressing generalizations (it’s often overlooked by travellers ) , and he partly uses present continuous tense while he is expressing actions which are happening at the moment of speaking ( It’s like chasing shadows and light when you go there ). Moreover, he uses present perfect tense a few times while he is refering to events connected to the present, without a definite past time ( Most houses have since disappeared but some have been repaired and are open to the public. )

This news has really attracted my attention and curiosity, and it has given point of view  to me about these desert towns. it has a informative, satisfying and attracting theme. I agree with his opinion ''It’s like chasing shadows and light when you go there .'' , for I am fascinated with this unique style of desert life .

reflection task 1b VECİHİ HÜRKUŞ

This week, I will introduce you Vecihi HÜRKUŞ who deserves much more admiration, but he faced many obligations in spite of his successes. I want to unearth his achievements and inventions. First of all, Vecihi HÜRKUŞ was born on 6th January 1896 in İstanbul and died on 16th July 1969 in GATA. His life is full of misfortunes besides to achievements. He joint WW1 and returned the İstanbul Yeşiköy when he was injured, then he reconnaissanced flights, also shut down a Russian airplane during one of these flights, so he is the first Turkish to shoot down an enemy airplane. He was given three İstiklal Madalyası for his successes in the war, and TBMM gave Taktirname for three times. After the war, he designed and created a few aircrafts inspite of many difficulties. He rented a lumber mill and produced his first airplane in there. Afterwards, on 28th January 1925, he took off the plane which he named as    VECİHİ K-VI. However, rather than a prize, a punishment was waiting for him. This is because there was no one who understood aviation, so he got off the ground without any permission and was punished because of that. Then, he left from military aviation and went on designing and inventing aircrafts. Moreover, he founded the first Turkish Civil Aeronautics School named as Vecihi Sivil Tayyare Mektebi. In this school, he brought up 12 pilots including the first Turkish female pilot Bedriye Gökmen. In 1937, Turkish Aeronautical Assocation sent him an engineering school in Germany fot taking engineering education. After two years, he came back after graduating, but he could not receive the licence of aircraft engineer for the reason that it was impossible to become engineer in two years. In 1954, he founded Hürkuş Airlines, but the company was precluded because of crashes, hijacks and sabotages. I am sure that he would want to be a successful aircraft engineer, which he managed it, and introduce Turkey to all the world as a pearl in the field of aero. In my opinion, he would succeed in these purposes.

The Galapagos Islands

Located  near the equator, the Galapagos Islands are a group of volcanic islands off the coast of Ecuador.Discovered by Spanish colonists in 1535, and first shown  on maps in about 1570, the islands were rarely visited, being a haven for pirates. Having  developed their own specializations and escaped the attentions of predators common elsewhere, the Galapagos species had become unique and afraid of people. Passing ships hunted seals and giant tortoises. Once captured the tortoises were kept alive on ships for long periods and later eaten. After facing  near extinction, few of these creatures remain today.Visited by the naturalist Charles Darwin in 1835, the islands  still have a close association with Darwinian theory, being the home to many species isolated from the mainland.
Finding later that birds which differed from island to island were in fact the same species. Now  protected as part of a national park, the islands are popular with eco tourists.
